Softball Splits Wednesday at Delaware

Wright goes 3-for-3 as Broncs take Game 1

NEWARK, DE Laneya Wright (Tucson, AZ/Marana) went 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI in a Game 1 win as the Rider University softball team split a doubleheader at Delaware Wednesday afternoon. With the split, the Broncs move to 6-14 on the year, while the Blue Hens are now 12-13.

In Game 1, Delaware struck first with a pair of two-out doubles in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. But after Wright led off the top of the second with a single, the Broncs scored three runs with the aid of three walks, an error and two wild pitches. Wright later delivered a two-out RBI double to plate Jadeyn Merrill (Lamesa, TX/Lamesa) to extend the lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth. The Blue Hens got a run back in the bottom of the seventh, but Niegocki closed out the 4-2 victory.

Game 2 was scoreless into the fifth inning as the Broncs' Kathryn Schmierer (Racine, WI/Racine Lutheran) and the Blue Hens' Taylor Wroten kept opposing batters off balance. Delaware struck for an unearned run on an error on a double-steal in the bottom of the fifth for what proved to be the winning run. The Blue Hens added a run in the sixth on a double and a single with one out to make it 2-0. The insurance was all Wroten, who carried a no hitter through 4.2 innings and allowed just two hits for the game, would need.

Notes
- Jessie Niegocki (Marana, AZ/Mountain View) earned the win in the circle in Game 1, allowing two runs, one earned, scattering nine hits, two hit-by-pitches and a walk. She struck out seven, matching her season high (Mar. 10 vs. Cleveland State) in the complete-game effort.
- Schmierer went the full 6.0 innings in Game 2 and took the loss. She limited Delaware to two runs, one earned, on five hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, while striking out one.
