CAMDEN, NJ – The Rider University baseball team needed 10 innings, but eventually got a 4-3 win over Lafayette Wednesday night. The Broncs improve to 5-3 on the season, while the Leopards drop to 1-7.
Rider took the lead in the second.
Brian Skettini (Midland Park, NJ/Ridgewood) drew a one-out walk.
Jack Winsett (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) followed with a single to left.
Anthony Paskell (Solon, OH/Saint Ignatius) followed with a double to left center that scored Skettini.
Jordan Erbe (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South[UMass]) delivered a single to left that made it 2-0.
Lafayette got one back in the top of the third with a bases-loaded walk, but the Broncs escaped further damage in the inning.
The Broncs added to the lead in the bottom of the third. With one out,
Brendan O'Donnell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) hit a chopper to third, but the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag. After a walk by
Luke Lesch (Gloucester Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Skettini was hit by a pitch to load the bases. O'Donnell came in to score on a ground out by Winsett.
The Leopards got single runs in the fourth and sixth as both bullpens started to lock in. Lafayette had the better of the opportunities, stranding two in the seventh, one in the eighth, and two in the ninth.
In the tenth, Erbe led off the inning with a double.
John Volpe (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) then drew a walk.
Scott Shaw (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) flew out to right center, but it was deep enough to allow Erbe to move up 90 feet. The Leopards elected to intentionally walk
Socrates Bardatsos (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Joseph's Regional) to load the bases, where O'Donnell then walked on four-straight pitches to force in the game winning run.
