BUIES CREEK, NC –
Olivia Burroughs (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual) and
Laneya Wright (Tucson, AZ/Marana) each went 2-for-3 and
Fallyn Stoeckel (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) picked up her second win in as many days as the Rider University softball team closed out Campbell Camel Stampede action with a 6-4 win over Wagner Sunday morning. With the win, the Broncs move to 2-3, while the Seahawks are now 2-5.
The Broncs struck for two runs in the first and a single run in the second to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Wright hit a two-run double to open the scoring in the first, while the Broncs manufactured a run in the second, with Burroughs singling, moving to second on an error, taking third on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on
Jessie Niegocki's (Marana, AZ/Mountain View) sacrifice fly.
The Seahawks got a run back in the bottom of the second, before
Amanda Cooper (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville) hit a solo, inside-the-park home run to push the lead back three runs, 4-1. The Seahawks kept the pressure on in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with one out. But Stoeckel came on and limited Wagner to one run on a fielder's choice, before extinguishing the threat with a groundout and a strikeout.
Wagner would take advantage of a pair of Rider errors in the bottom of the fifth to even the score at 4-4. But Rider wasn't done.
Kristyn Gardner (Perryville, MD/Perryville) led off the sixth with a single, before Burroughs doubled to put runners on second and third.
Julia Harsche (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph-by-the-Sea) then delivered the go-ahead RBI single to score Gardner and the Broncs executed a squeeze play, with Niegocki laying it down to plate Burroughs and go ahead, 6-4. Stoeckel navigated the final two innings, allowing just one single to slam the door on the victory.
