Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Gary Erdelyi

Women's Soccer Takes Down Canisius, 1-0

Broncs pick up massive three points with MAAC win over the Golden Griffins

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ- Rider University Women's Soccer scored a massive 1-0 victory over Canisius, moving the Broncs into 4th place in the MAAC with 13 points. With the win, the Broncs move to 6-6-2 and 4-3-1 in the MAAC and drop the Golden Griffins to 7-3-5 and 4-2-2 in the MAAC.

Both teams played to a scoreless first half where Canisius led in shots, 8-4, but the Broncs would get more quality looks with a 3-2 advantage on goal. One of the best looks of the first half, however, came from Mia Iacona of Canisius in the 17th minute. Iacona rifled a shot toward the crossbar and Rider goalkeeper Ellie Sciancalepore (Randolph, NJ/ Randolph) flew after it, denying the Griffs' best chance of the first half.

The match's lone goal came in the 67th minute as Chloe Fisher found the back of the net to secure her third goal of the season, and her first at home since 2021 vs. Marist. The goal was set off a pass from Ava Ferrie (Branford, CT Branford) to Genevieve Ryan (Auckland, New Zealand Mount Albert Grammar School) in the midfield. Ryan then sent a ball into the box for Fisher, who drilled it, giving the Broncs the lead in the second half.

The Golden Griffins fired 14 shots in the second half, five of which would land on target and all five were stopped by Sciancalepore. Canisius would test the 2022 MAAC Golden Glove winner Sciancalepore with three shots on goal in the last minute of the match and the the Broncs netminder would stand tall, picking up her fourth shutout of the year and her 14th of her career.

QUOTES & NOTES
"Huge three points, the first half was super close and we generated some really good chances, the second half got a bit messy the opposition changed up what they were doing so it became about can you grind it out can you win balls can you not make mistakes and it was definitely tense there but super proud of this team to go find the goal and to pick up a massive shutout" – Rider Head Coach Drayson Hounsome

"Every goal obviously means a lot to me, especially coming off the injury last year but this one at home being a game-winner it doesn't really get better than that so I'm super happy… It's about those little moments it doesn't matter where we are in the league it's super close between these teams so it comes down to those little moments and I'm glad that we did that today" - Rider Forward Chloe Fisher
- The win is Rider's first vs Canisius since 2021.
- With the win the Broncs move into 4th in the MAAC behind Quinnipiac, Canisius and Fairfield.
- Fisher's third of the year is her first in Lawrenceville since 10/13/21 vs Marist. Fisher missed the 2022 season due to injury.
- The win and the shutout put Sciancalepore in sole possession of 3rd all-time in Rider history in wins and 2nd all-time in shutouts.

BRONCS BY THE NUMBERS
