NEWARK, DE – The Rider University baseball team will not have an opportunity to claim the Liberty Bell Classic after falling 6-2 in a semifinal game to Delaware on Wednesday. The Broncs drop to 15-12 on the season, while the Blue Hens improve to 16-10.
Rider opened the game, taking the lead in the second.
Socrates Bardatsos (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Joseph's Regional) and
Luke Lesch (Gloucester Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. A pair of wild pitches allowed Bardatsos to cross the plate as the game's first run.
After the Blue Hens tied the game on an RBI groundout, both pitching staffs settled in, keeping the game 1-1 through the fifth.
In the sixth,
John Volpe (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) turned on a pitch and sent it over the wall in left center for a solo home run that put Rider back in front.
The lead would be short lived. Delaware led off the bottom of the inning with a home run that sparked a four-run inning, giving the Blue Hens a lead they would not give up. A run tacked on in the seventh would produce the final score.
