LOUDONVILLE, NY –
Laneya Wright (Tucson, AZ/Marana) led the Rider University softball team with four hits on the day, but the Broncs were swept in a doubleheader at Siena, 2-0 and 5-2, Saturday. With the losses, the Broncs fall to 25-22-1 (8-8 MAAC), while the Saints are now 24-21 (10-6 MAAC).
In Game 1, the Broncs limited the Saints to just two hits, but with the aid of two walks and three hit-by-pitches, Siena scored two runs in a 2-0 win. The first run came in the third, as the Saints got a leadoff hit-by-pitch that came around to score on a one-out double. In the fifth, it was a leadoff error that got things started, with a pair of groundouts and a hit-by-pitch preceding a double steal for the second run. Rider put a runner on third on three occasions in the game, but could not score, falling by a 2-0 score.
In Game 2, Rider immediately struck for two runs in the top of the first with
Jessie Niegocki (Marana, AZ/Mountain View) reaching on an error to lead off the game, before an
Amanda Cooper (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville) single and a groundout pushed the runners to second and third for
Grace Stansfield (Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter), who plated both with a single to right field. But the two runs were all the Rider offense would produce on the day and Siena clawed back with a solo home run in the third, a bases-clearing double and a single and a pair of errors for an insurance tally in the fifth to take the 5-2 win and the doubleheader sweep.
