Baseball Topped by Monmouth in Series Opener

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Rider University baseball team dropped a tight game to open its series against Monmouth, 5-3, Friday afternoon. The game tightens the MAAC standings with both teams now tied at 8-5 in conference play. The Broncs fall to 21-19 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 19-19 overall.

The Broncs fell behind 2-0 in the first after the Hawks loaded the bases with no outs.

In the third, Jordan Erbe (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South[UMass]) was hit by a pitch with one out. The next batter, John Volpe (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall), made his high-school teammate and Monmouth starter Trey Dombroski pay, with a two run home run over the fence in left.

It was a quick response by Monmouth. The Hawks collected four hits in the bottom of the third, scoring three to retake the lead 5-2.

Jake Barbiere (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) led off the fourth with an infield single. He came around to score on a pair of Monmouth errors, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

The Broncs threatened again in the sixth. Again, it was Barbiere leading the inning off with a single. Two batters later, Brian Skettini (Midland Park, NJ/Ridgewood) singled to put runners on first and second. With two outs and runners still on first and second, Brendan O'Donnell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) hit a long fly ball to center field, but Jake Catalano made a diving catch, robbing the O'Donnell of extra bases and Rider from likely tying the game.
