LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Alyssa Ansara (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne) had three hits and three runs scored and
Gianna Epps (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown),
Elena Gonzalez (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) and
Olivia Burroughs (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual) each added two hits as the Rider University softball team swept a doubleheader from Lafayette, 7-0 and 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at Herb and Joan Young Field. With the sweep, the Broncs move to 13-9, while the Leopards are now 5-20.
In Game 1, the Broncs broke the game open with a four-run bottom of the third. Ansara singled, stole second and took third when the throw from the catcher went into center field and snuck through the center fielder's legs. Epps followed with an RBI single, before the second run scored on a
Grace Stansfield (Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter) double down the right-field line. The third and fourth runs scored on a throwing error that would've ended the frame.
Rider tacked on three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Burroughs hit an RBI double after
Chaela Crowder (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) got things started with a pinch-hit single. Two more runs scored on Epps' single to make it 7-0. The support was more than enough for Rider starting pitcher
Anna-Marie Groskritz (Granby, CT/Granby Memorial), who spun a complete-game, three-hit shutout.
In Game 2, Gonzalez's two-run triple put the Broncs on top, 2-0, in bottom of the first.
Jessie Niegocki (Marana, AZ/Mountain View) and Ansara started the inning with a pair of singles and scored on the Gonzalez three-bagger. Lafayette got a run back in the fifth as a leadoff walk came around to score on a two-out RBI single from Natasha Miner. But
Brooklyn Trujillo-Quintana (Henderson, CO/Prairie View) got the final out of the inning and Niegocki recorded the final six outs for the save.
