Softball Falls in Pitchers' Duel at Penn State, 2-0

Groskritz limits Nittany Lions to one earned run on three hits

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The Rider University softball team fell in a pitchers' duel, 2-0, Friday evening at Penn State. With the loss, the Broncs fall to 8-7, while the Nittany Lions improve to 13-11.

Neither team could get a runner past second base through four innings, with the Broncs getting base hits from Grace Stansfield (Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter) in the second, Jessie Niegocki (Marana, AZ/Mountain View) in the third and Chaela Crowder (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) in the fifth. But the decisive frame was the bottom of the fifth, when a leadoff walk came around to score on a two-out double. The Nittany Lions would tack on another unearned run on an error before the inning was over.

Penn State pitcher Bailey Parshall retired the last eight batters she faced to close out her complete-game, three-hit shutout. On the other side, Anna-Marie Groskritz (Granby, CT/Granby Memorial) allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits and three walks, while striking out two.
