GREENSBORO, NC –
Olivia Burroughs (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual) went 2-for-3 with an RBI single, but the Rider University softball team fell to George Washington, 4-1, Sunday to close out play in the Spiro Classic. With the loss, the Broncs slip to 1-3, while the Colonials are now 2-5.
George Washington plated two runs in the first on a pair of singles, a double steal and consecutive wild pitches in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. A pair of singles, a stolen base and a sacrifice fly pushed the Colonials' lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second, before the Broncs put a run on the board with singles from
Grace Stansfield (Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter),
Lani Moreno (Claremont, CA/Claremont) and Burroughs to open the inning. But Burrough's RBI base hit to score Stansfield would be the only damage, as George Washington pitcher Sierra Lange struck out the next three batters looking to extinguish the threat.
The Colonials tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth with three-straight singles of their own to make it a 4-1 advantage.
