LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Rider University baseball team was swept in a doubleheader Sunday at Siena, with the Saints taking Game 1, 4-0, and Game 2, 9-3. The Broncs conclude the regular season at 18-16 with the losses, while Siena is now 14-20.
Siena did two-out damage in the first inning of Game 1 to open the scoring. Brett Young singled to center, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Eddie Sweeney's double down the left-field line. The Saints added another run in the fifth on an RBI single from Kobe Stenson and plated two more in the sixth on Evan St. Claire's two-run double. The support was more than enough for Siena starting pitcher John Lumpinski, who limited the Broncs to one hit and one walk in a complete-game shutout.
Following three scoreless frames in Game 2, the Saints scored four in the fourth and five in the fifth to open a 9-0 lead. Rider got a run back in the sixth on a
Socrates Bardatsos (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Joseph's Regional) solo home run and plated two more in the ninth.
Brendan O'Donnell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) singled to open the inning, moved to second on a groundout, took third on a
Jordan Erbe (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) single and scored on
Alex Diamantis' (Staten Island, NY/Saint Peter's Boys) groundout.
David Bermudez (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) followed with an RBI single, but the Broncs could draw no closer than 9-3.
Quotes & Notes
"18-16 is where we finish. Time to get ready for the tournament."
– Rider Head Coach Barry Davis
-
Frank Doelling (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) started Game 1 and took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out nine.
-
Joe Papeo (Matawan, NJ/Old Bridge) started Game 2 and was charged with the loss, surrendering seven earned runs on six hits and three walks in 4.1 innings pitched. He struck out five.
-

- The Broncs return to action May 21-23, when the MAAC Championships begin with a three-game set in the opening round. The Broncs have clinched a spot in the tournament and depending on the coming week's results, could host the series. The top four seeds in the tournament will host the No. 5-8 seeds for the right to move on to a four-team double elimination tournament the following week, May 27-30.
- Rider has clinched at least the No. 5 seed in the MAAC Championships. In order to fall that far and not host a MAAC Championship series, both Marist (13-7, May 12 doubleheader vs. Siena, May 15-16 four-game series) and Canisius (12-9, three games to complete vs. Quinnipiac on May 10, May 12 doubleheader vs. Saint Peter's, May 15-16 four-game series at Quinnipiac) would have to reach or exceed Rider's 18 wins. The Red Foxes hold the head-to-head tie-breaker with the Broncs, so 18 wins would secure a higher position that Rider. However, Canisius and Rider split in the regular-season series and the Griffs' results against Monmouth in the final weekend of the season may determine a potential tie-breaker. Rider split with the Hawks.
