Canisius Sweeps Softball Sunday

Moreno contributes three hits

BUFFALO, NY Lani Moreno (Claremont, CA/Claremont) led the Broncs with three hits on the day, but the Rider University softball team was swept in a Sunday doubleheader at Canisius Sunday. With the losses, the Broncs slip to 14-18 on the year, while Griffs are now 21-10. Canisius won Game 1, 11-0, before taking Game 2, 6-1.

In Game 1, the Griffs plated the first run in the bottom of the third on an infield single with a three-base throwing error. Canisius then busted the game open with a 10-run fourth on seven hits, four walks, a hit-by-pitch and two errors to take an 11-0 lead. The Griffs recorded the final three outs in the top of the fifth to enact the mercy rule.

The Broncs scored first in the top of the third inning of Game 2 with an unearned run. Alyssa Ansara (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne) singled, moved to second on a passed ball, took third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. The first four Canisius batters in the bottom of the third each had base hits, followed by a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly to plate three runs and give the Griffs a 3-1 lead after three. Canisius tacked on two more in the fourth on a run-scoring groundout, with a second run scoring on an error on the play. The Griffs added one last insurance run in the fifth as an error to lead off the inning came around to score on a two-out RBI single. The Broncs were shut out over the final four innings as the Griffs closed out the doubleheader sweep.
