Marist Sweeps Doubleheader From Baseball

Priolo leads Rider with four hits, Skettini adds first collegiate home run

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ Lou Priolo (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) led the Rider University baseball team with four hits on the day, but the Broncs were swept in a doubleheader with Marist Wednesday afternoon on Sonny Pittaro Field. With the losses, the Broncs fall to 13-13, while the Red Foxes are now 9-3.

Rider scored the first two runs of Game 1 in the bottom of the second. Luke Lesch (Gloucester Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) reached on a throwing error and a potential double-play ball to the shortstop side of second base from Tyler Stockwell (La Plata, MD/La Plata High School) took a bad hop for a single, putting runners on the corners. Lou Priolo (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) plated Lesch with a single to right, before the second Rider run scored on a double-play ball.

Marist responded with a six-run top of the third to take a 6-2 lead. After Kenny Quijano (Teaneck, NJ/St. Mary's) recorded the first out of the inning, a hit-by-pitch and five-straight hits, including a three-run home run from Brian Hart, signaled the end of his outing. Hart added a second home run, this time a solo shot, in the fifth to make it 7-2 Marist. The Red Foxes added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to make it 8-2. Rider responded with a single tally in the sixth on Priolo's second RBI single of the game scored two more in the seventh on a two-run single from David Bermudez (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick). But Marist reliever Nick Cantone came on to get the final two outs and the save, stranding two.

Marist scored two runs in the first, two more in the second and three in the fourth inning to take control of Game 2. The Broncs got single runs back in the fifth and sixth innings on a Jake Barbiere (Stratford, NJ/Sterling) RBI single and Brian Skettini's (Midland Park, NJ/Ridgewood) first collegiate home run, respectively. The Red Foxes got both runs back in the seventh on a two-run single from Matt Rubayo. The teams exchanged single runs in the bottom of the eighth and top of the ninth, with Lesch singling home Priolo for the Broncs and Marist countering with an RBI single from Niko Amory to close out the scoring.
