Baseball Splits Sunday at Canisius

Shaw collects three hits, bullpen pitches nine innings without an earned run

BUFFALO, NY Scott Shaw (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill High School West) had three hits and two RBI's and the Broncs bullpen pitched nine innings of relief without allowing an earned run as the Rider University baseball team split a doubleheader at Canisius Sunday. The Griffs took Game 1, 8-0, before the Broncs bounced back with a 4-3 win in Game 2. With the split, the Broncs move to 12-10, while Canisius is now 10-8.

In Game 1, Canisius scored one in the first, three in the fourth and four in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead. On the flip side, Griffs starting pitcher Ryan Boyer was sterling, limiting Rider to two hits and a walk in seven shutout innings, striking out nine to earn the win.

The Broncs scored first in Game 2, with Sean McGeehan (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham) hitting a two-out double and Brendan O'Donnell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) following with an RBI single. Canisius immediately responded with two in the bottom of the inning, with a run-scoring sacrifice fly and an RBI double to take a 2-1 lead after two. The Broncs evened the score in the top of the third, with Lou Priolo (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) doubling and scoring on Shaw's single.

Rider scratched across a run in the top of the seventh. Luke Lesch (Gloucester Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) walked, Jordan Erbe (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) singled and Lesch would score following a pair of fielder's choices, the last from Shaw for the RBI and a 3-2 Rider lead. A pair of errors in the bottom of the frame came back to bite the Broncs as Canisius tied the game at 3-3 after seven.

John Volpe (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) hit an infield single to begin the eighth and moved two bases on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Two walks loaded the bases before Socrates Bardatsos (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Joseph's Regional) scored Volpe with a groundout, giving Rider a 4-3 lead. Danny Kirwin (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) entered with runners on first and second and no one out in the sixth, stranded both runners and pitched 3.0 innings, allowing just one unearned run, to pick up the win. Cal Stalzer (West Des Moines, IA/Valley) recorded the final three outs for the save.

Quotes & Notes
"We flushed Game 1 and did a great job bouncing back in Game 2. We showed a lot of character. DelGuercio, Kirwin and Stalzer were superb out of the pen. We played situational baseball offensively to push a few runs across." – Rider Head Coach Barry Davis

- Pete Soporowski (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) started Game 1 on the mound and took the loss. He allowed eight runs, six earned, on seven hits and three walks, striking out six.
- Liam Harding (Staten Island, NY/Saint Peter's Boys) pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless, hitless relief in Game 1, striking out one and walking one.
- Kenny Quijano (Teaneck, NJ/St. Mary's) started Game 2 and allowed two earned runs on four hits and three walks, striking out two.
- Frank DelGuercio (Millstone, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, limiting Canisius to three hits and three walks, while striking out two.
- Kirwin struck out six in 3.0 innings of relief, striking out the side while stranding the bases loaded, including two inherited baserunners, in the sixth.
- Stalzer picked up his third save of the year, allowing a hit and a walk in a scoreless ninth.
