Austin Devereux Becomes Rider's First-Ever MAAC Men's Golf Individual Champion

Devereux wins tournament at -6; Broncs finish second in team standings

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – Senior Austin Devereux (Brielle, NJ/Manasquan) shot two-under Sunday to finish six under for the tournament and win the McLeod Trophy, representative of the top individual finisher. The Broncs continued their charge up the team leaderboard as well, finishing second at eight over for the tournament, four strokes behind Iona for the team championship. The second-place finish matches Rider's best-ever final standing, which was established in 2008. Sunday's final round was abbreviated to nine holes due to a two-hour rain delay and time constraints, leaving it as a 45-hole tournament.

Entering the day as the individual leader at four under following a second-round 69, Devereux was solid all day Sunday with two birdies and seven pars to hold off the field. Devereux's six under performance is the lowest to par at MAAC Championships since 2013, when Fairfield's Steve Burak won the McLeod Trophy with an eight-under (208) performance.

Joining Devereux on the All-MAAC Team, comprised of the top 10 individual finishers in the tournament, was sophomore Connor Bekefi (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North). Bekefi shot three under on his nine-hole round, making birdie on four-straight holes, the 13th through 16th, to finish fourth individually at two over for the tournament.

Griffin Smith (Holland, PA/Council Rock South) and Nathan Bazant (Venetia, PA/Trinity) each shot two over Sunday to finish tied for 28th and 32nd, respectively, while Thomas Durkin (Suffield, CT/Suffield) shot four over on the day to finish 36th for the tournament.

Iona took the team championship, shooting an even-par 144 on the day to finish at five over for the tournament (725). Rider finished three strokes back at 728 following a third-round, one-under 143. The leader after two rounds, Fairfield dropped to third at 729 with a third-round, seven-over 151. Niagara (735), Canisius and Monmouth (740), Siena (741) and Manhattan (787) rounded out the tournament field. Due to COVID-19 safety protocols, Saint Peter's sent just three golfers to compete as individuals, but was ineligible for the team title.

NOTES
- Devereux is now a three-time All-MAAC performer, earning the honor in all three years that he could (2020 Championships were canceled). He finished tied for sixth as a freshman in 2018, took fourth as a sophomore in 2019 and jumped to the medalist position in his senior season of 2021.
