LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ –
Frank Doelling (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) hurled a complete-game, two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in Game 1 as the Rider University baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader with Niagara. Rider won Game 1, 9-0, before the Purple Eagles salvaged one win in the four-game series with an 8-3 win in Game 2. The Broncs move to 3-1 with the split, while the Purple Eagles are 1-3.
In Game 1, Rider scored three in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to give more than enough support to Doelling.
Scott Shaw (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill High School West) scored from third on a wild pitch to open the scoring, before a
Brian Skettini (Midland Park, NJ/Ridgewood) sacrifice fly and a
Luke Lesch (Gloucester Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) RBI double scored the next two runs.
Sean McGeehan (Hamilton, NJ/Nottingham)'s fourth-inning RBI double put the Broncs on top, 4-0, before
Jordan Erbe (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) collected the first of his two RBI's on a sacrifice fly in the fifth. A throwing error allowed the Broncs to tack on another run to make it 6-0 after five. Lesch plated Skettini with a single in the sixth, before Erbe drove in two with a single to account for the 9-0 final score in the seven-inning contest.
In Game 2, Niagara scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings, before scoring five runs on four hits and two errors in the top of the ninth. Rider capitalized on a pair of walks to begin the bottom of the ninth, with both coming home to score. But the Purple Eagles closed out the 8-3 victory.
