LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Capucine Thuilot won her top singles match and
Ally Garofoli (Springboro, OH/Springboro) and
Angelica Garcia (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/Academia Maria Reina) won at No. 2 doubles, but the Rider University women's tennis team fell to Wagner, 6-1, Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs close out the Fall season at 0-2.
"Tough day as we played tight today," said Rider Head Coach
Tom Battaglia. "Game plan was to come out aggressive and we were stuck in neutral for a while. We turned it on when it was too late, and we need to learn to play on the baseline from first serve to last return. I know we have another level in us. We are excited to hit the courts having a solid six players everyday. Spotting the other team two points out doesn't help matters. Injuries happen, so thankful we are getting a healthy squad back soon."
Garofoli and Garcia defeated Fidan Khalilzade and Samantha Lugtu, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles. But the Seahawks took the top flight and won the doubles point with a default at No. 3.
In singles, Thuilot defeated Khalilzade, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1. But the Seahawks would win the final four flights completed and No. 6 by default to account for the 6-1 decision. The Broncs were competitive throughout, with Garofoli taking her match at No. 3 to a third set.
The Broncs return to action Feb. 18-20, when they take part in the Ranger Invitational, hosted by Drew University.
