Women's Soccer Scores Twice in Second Half to Defeat Canisius

Garcia, Rodrigues score in victory

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Gabriela Garcia (Caracas, Venezuela) and Makenzie Rodrigues (Seattle, WA/Forest Ridge) scored as the Rider University women's soccer team earned its first conference win against Canisius Saturday afternoon on Ben Cohen Field. With the win, the Broncs improve to 3-5-2 (1-2-1 MAAC), while the Griffs fall to 0-8-2 (0-4-0 MAAC).

Following a scoreless first half, Rider would break the stalemate in the 47th minute as Camyrn Dees (Pickerington, OH/Pickerington H.S. North) served a corner kick to Garcia, who would head the ball past Canisius goalkeeper Jessica Jones to give the Broncs a 1-0 advantage. The Broncs' offense wouldn't stop there though, with Amanda Mendez (Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood) dribbling through Canisius defenders at the goal line to pass to a waiting Rodrigues who sent the ball to the back of the net to push the lead to 2-0 in the 70th minute of play.

The remaining 20 minutes of play would see Rider halt the Canisius offense to secure the Broncs' second shutout of the season.

Quotes and Notes
"We kept a clean sheet, we scored more goals than the opponent and we didn't get any injuries. So, it was a fantastic performance."

"We've got a little more compactness, we've had time to work on some things, so our defensive shape is much better. We've had injuries – three of the four girls who are injured are starting defenders, so it takes time when you need to put new people into that defensive line and for them to understand it get that cohesion. It certainly looked decent today." – Rider Head Coach Drayson Hounsome

"I think in the second half, we really stepped it up. We kept possession throughout. But in the second half, we found more attacking passes and broke them down a little bit more." – Rider junior forward Makenzie Rodrigues

"It means a lot for the team to get the goal in the first minutes of the second half. I think we are carrying this high energy, so that's helping us a lot. We're improving every single game." Rider senior midfielder Gabriela Garcia
