WASHINGTON, DC –
Chaela Crowder (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) and
Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, NY/Plainledge) had three hits apiece, but the Rider University softball team was defeated by Winthrop, 7-1, and George Washington, 5-2, Saturday at the Buff & Blue Challenge. With the losses, the Broncs fall to 0-12, while the Eagles improved to 12-9 and the Colonials are now 8-12.
Winthrop immediately jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a single and a home run to open the bottom of the first, before adding three more in the third on five walks and a fielder's choice. The Eagles lead swelled to 7-0 on a two-run home run in the sixth. Rider pieced together a run in the seventh as
Melanie Wilkinson (Richboro, PA/Council Rock South) doubled, advanced to third on a Marigliano single and scored on an
Elena Gonzalez (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) sacrifice fly. But the Eagles closed out the 7-1 victory.
Following three scoreless innings, Rider took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth against George Washington. Marigliano led off with a triple and scored on a Gonzalez single. Gonzalez was erased on a
Lani Moreno (Claremont, CA/Claremont) fielder's choice, but Crowder and
Grace Stansfield (Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter) followed with singles and
Brianna Koonce's (Warminster, PA/William Tennent) groundout pushed Moreno across.
However, GW immediately got the two runs back on a walk and a home run and took the lead on a pair of singles, a throwing error and a run-scoring groundout. The Colonials tacked on two more runs in the fifth and held on for the 5-2 victory.
