Women's Soccer Comes Back to Defeat Wagner in 2OT

Arrington Scores Twice, Freshmen Connect on Golden Goal

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Sophomore Nikki Arrington (Middleton, MA/Masconomet Regional) scored the first two goals of her career, both equalizers, and three freshmen combined on the golden goal as the Rider University women's soccer team opened the 2019 season with a 3-2 double-overtime win over Wagner, Friday night on Ben Cohen Field. With the win, the Broncs are 1-0, while the Seahawks slip to 0-1.

Just 45 seconds into the game, Wagner's Mariana Jaramillo got on the end of a Lindsay Weiss cross from point-blank range to put the Seahawks on top, 1-0. Arrington equalized in the 41st minute, collecting Niamh Cashin's (Nottingham, England/All Saints Academy) pass from the midfield at the top, right corner of the 18-yard box before shooting past Seahawks goalkeeper Erin Kelly, who got a fingertip on the shot, but not enough to stop it. Wagner would respond once again, this time with an own goal in the 42nd minute to take a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Arrington wasted little time equalizing again in the 51st minute. This time, she finished Hailey Russell's (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) through ball into the box before finishing. After nearly 50 scoreless minutes, the Broncs scored the golden goal in the 105th minute. Freshman Camryn Dees (Pickerington, OH/Pickerington H.S. North) played classmate Makenzie Rodrigues into the right corner. Rodrigues crossed to Russell, who got her right foot on it to redirect her shot off the goalkeeper, then the crossbar and in.

"Camryn was out of the midfield and sent it to Makenzie and Makenzie sent it across. I just happened to get a foot on it. The win was a team effort. If she didn't send that ball, I wouldn't have been able to put it in the goal."

- Rider has now won two-straight over Wagner, both in overtime. The Broncs took a 2-1 win last year on Staten Island and have won seven of the last eight against Wagner. All-time, Rider now leads the series, 7-4.
- Freshmen Russell, Dees, Rodrigues, Lindsey Maslow (Hanover, MA/Hanover) and Kaitlyn Wong (Walnut, CA/Walnut) each made their Rider debuts, with all five starting the game.
- Cameron Santers (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills), Teresa Richardson (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman), Cashin and Maslow each played all 105 minutes, as did goalkeeper Carmen Carbonell (Valencia, Spain/Guadalaviar School).
- The goals and assists were the first in the careers of Arrington, Russell, Dees and Rodrigues.

Broncs By The Numbers
- Cashin collected the second assist of her career.
- The Broncs outshot Wagner, 21-6, for the game, including a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal.
- Rider also took a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
