LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - Freshman
Brooklyn Trujillo (Henderson, CO/Prairie View) pitched a complete game for the win in the second game of today's doubleheader, but Monmouth would take the first and split the hOURglass doubleheader. With the split, the Broncs move to 5-27, 2-4 MAAC while the Hawks go to 21-12, 7-1 MAAC.
Monmouth pitcher Alyssa Irons went the distance and allowed just four hits in the first game. Two Hawk runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth put the game away with a 6-0 final score.
In the second game, Monmouth would continue its momentum with two quick runs thanks to an Amber Wozniak homer, but that would be all Trujillo gave up on the day. The freshman went the distance and would not allow another runner to cross home. She scattered six hits, struck out four, and walked two. Rider would then shake off prior second inning struggles to put up five runs in the bottom half of the second inning. After Monmouth swapped pitchers with the bases loaded,
Grace Stansfield (Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter) earned an RBI to make it a 2-1 game.
Gianna Epps (Pottstown, PA/Pottstown) gave the Broncs the lead with a 2-RBI single up the middle,
Maddy Chain (Gloucester/Gloucester City) had another RBI single to extend the lead to 4-2, and
Elyse Cuttic (Easton, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) had a single to right field that resulted in the 5-2 final score.
QUOTES & NOTES
"Game 1, we came out and let the Monmouth name scare us a little bit. After we saw what they had, we came back and stayed aggressive. [Brooklyn] was outstanding today and kept Monmouth off-balance. She was doing so well in relief in the first game that we decided to keep her going."
- Rider Head Coach Davon Ortega
"I just wanted to change my demeanor from yesterday from that negative mindset. We are super excited about this win and a lot of people were doubting us. Nobody expected us to win and it was their first loss in the conference. We just have to focus on the next conference game."
- Rider freshman pitcher Brooklyn Trujillo
- The win versus Monmouth in Game 2 was the first for the Broncs since April 8, 2017, when Rider won 8-7 in Lawrenceville.Â
- Trujillo threw three and one-third innings of relief in Game 1, allowing one unearned run on two hits while striking out two Hawks. Combined for the day, she threw 10 and a third innings and allowed just two earned runs while striking out six.
- The Broncs will next host Lehigh on Wednesday with first pitch of the non-conference doubleheader slated for 2:30 pm.
BRONCS BY THE NUMBERS
-Â Cuttic led the team with three hits on the day, making her the eighth Bronc to have at least ten hits on the season.
- The Game 2 win for Trujillo was her third of her freshman campaign. She continues to lead the Broncs in appearances, starts, complete games, innings, ERA, wins, and opposing batting average in 2019.
- Monmouth CF Lindsey Baron entered the day tenth in the MAAC in batting average at .330, but Rider pitching held her to just one hit in seven at-bats.
