JERSEY CITY, NJ –
Debra Jones (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown) struck out a career-high 12 batters in Game 1 and 18 on the day as the Rider University softball team split a pair of wild, 10-inning games at Saint Peter's on Saturday. With the split, the Broncs move to 6-30 (3-5 MAAC), while the Peacocks are now 5-30 (1-7 MAAC).
The Broncs struck first with a run in the top of the first of Game 1.
Kelsey Marigliano (Seaford, NY/Plainledge) led off with a single and scored on
Maddy Chain's (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester City) two-out RBI single. The Peacocks evened the score at 1-1 with an Alina Guevara RBI double with one out in the bottom of the seventh. But following a pair of scoreless frames, the Broncs got some two-out magic in the 10
th. Chain singled,
Lani Moreno (Claremont, CA/Claremont) doubled and both base runners scored on a two-run single by
Rachael Zeides (Woodbine, NJ/Ocean City). Jones slammed the door shut with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 10
th.
Seven innings wouldn't be enough in Game 2, either. But this time it was the Broncs coming from behind to tie the game in their final at bat. Saint Peter's built a lead with a run in the first and two more in the second. Rider got single runs in the third and fourth innings, first on a
Shelby Miller (Roseville, CA/Whitney) RBI single and later as
Brianna Parisio (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial),
Elyse Cuttic (Easton, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) and Marigliano strung together consecutive one-out singles.
But Saint Peter's got both runs back in the bottom of the fourth and added another in the fifth to build a 6-2 lead. However, Rider scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh to force extra innings. Saint Peter's issued two-out free passes to Marigliano,
Kiera Swank (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) and
Grace Stansfield (Philadelphia, PA/William Penn Charter) with a walk, a hit-by-pitch and a walk, respectively, before Miller delivered a two-run single to cut the deficit in half. In the seventh, Moreno and Zeides led off the inning with singles before Parisio moved them up to second and third.
Brooklyn Trujillo's (Henderson, CO/Prairie View) scored Moreno before Marigliano delivered a two-out RBI single to score Zeides and tie the game at 6-6. But following another two scoreless innings, Saint Peter's won it with a pair of doubles in the 10
th.
