Cunningham scores equalizer, but Highlanders score twice late

NEWARK, NJKourtney Cunningham (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) scored her team-leading second goal of the season to tie the game in the 75th minute, but NJIT scored twice late to defeat the Rider University women's soccer team, 3-1, Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncs wrap up the non-conference slate at 0-6, while the Highlanders improve to 4-3.

Briana Hackos opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, knocking in a rebound off a corner kick. Cunningham scored the equalizer in the 75th minute, beating her defender before unleashing a shot from atop the 18-yard box to tie the score at 1-1.

But NJIT retook the lead on Katrina Nguyen-DeMary's goal in the 85th minute and removed any doubt with Arianna Gerber's insurance goal in the 90th minute.

Quotes & Notes
"It was a disappointing outcome after such a positive performance in the previous game. NJIT have beaten four MAAC teams now and I'm sure will do well in the A-Sun Conference. For us, we will get back to training hard on Tuesday and be prepared to compete for 90 minutes for three points in the next game on Saturday." - Rider Head Coach Drayson Hounsome

- Rider freshman goalkeeper Carmen Carbonell (Valencia, Spain/Guadalaviar School) started the game and made four saves in 31 minutes without allowing a goal before departing. Amy Kozlowski (Middletown, CT/Middletown) replaced Carbonell and was greeted rudely with an NJIT goal off a corner kick 29 seconds after entering the game. Kozlowski made two saves, while a Broncs back was also credited with clearly a shot off the goal line.
- The Broncs saw a three-game winning streak against NJIT snapped.
