Manhattan sweeps Broncs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
RIVERDALE, NYDelany DeMello (Roseville, CA/Roseville) had a pair of hits, but the Rider University softball team was swept at Manhattan, 8-0 and 5-0, Sunday in the Broncs' league openers. With the setbacks, the Broncs slip to 3-20 (0-2 MAAC), while the Jaspers are now 15-9 (2-0 MAAC).

Manhattan scored three runs in the second inning of Game 1 and never trailed. The run support was all Jaspers starting pitcher Brianna Matazinsky would need, as she hurled a one-hit shutout, striking out six. The Jaspers scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to abbreviate the game.

The Jaspers again jumped on the Broncs in Game 2, scoring twice in the first and three more runs in the second. Kaitlyn Kallert (Woodland Park, NJ/Passaic Valley) pitched four innings of no-hit relief, allowing just one walk, while striking out six. But the Broncs couldn't get on the scoreboard. The Broncs threatened in the fifth, with Kiera Swank (Bear, DE/Caravel Academy) doubling and Brianna Parisio (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) singling to lead off the inning. Rider executed a successful double steal, but the play was nullified by umpire's interference. A fielder's choice and a double play got the Jaspers out the inning unscathed.

NOTES
• DeMello took the Game 1 loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks. She struck out three.
Emily Oltman (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) was tagged for the Game 2 loss, with allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits and a walk in 2.0 innings pitched.

BRONCS BY THE NUMBERS
• The Broncs managed just four hits on the day, with two coming from DeMello (one in each game) and the other two in succession by Swank and Parisio to open the fifth inning in Game 2.
Amanda Jordan (Somerset, NJ/Franklin Township) and Elyse Cuttic (Easton, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) also reached safely with walks.
