PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Rider University track and field team opened up action at the 123rd Penn Relays on Thursday at Franklin Field. On the first day of the three-day event, the Broncs set a new University record and saw other strong individual performances.

Freshman thrower Fidele Jules (Tinton Falls, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) had a strong start to the event for Rider, coming in first place in the College Women's Shot Put with a toss of 15.03M. The toss was a new Rider record and topped the second-place finisher by over a foot.

Senior Brad Kaufmann (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) was the other Bronc to set a new personal best on Thursday. He finished in 20th-place in the 3,000M Steeplechase with a mark of 9:15.47.

NOTES & QUOTES
“It was a record breaking day for Fidele Jules setting a new Rider record of 49-3.75 feet in the shot put,” Rider Head Coach Bob Hamer said. “She has been improving each week and her training has been really good and we knew she was going to put a big throw out there. It was just a matter of time and when she was ready to put all the pieces together for a really big throw.

“Kaufmann ran a strong race in the steeplechase tonight with a PR and an IC4A qualifier,” Hamer added. “Brad ran a really good race, he just has to work on the last third of the race then he will have the big break through that he is looking for.”

“The women's 4x100 ran a decent race today, we were hoping to break 48 seconds and get the ECAC qualifier but just fell short,” Hamer noted. “It was a solid day one and we are looking to improve our performances for Friday's action.”

- The toss from Jules in the shot put was an ECAC qualifier.
- Kaufmann's mark in the steeplechase was an IC4A qualifier.
