Women's Soccer Earns 2-0 Road Win At Canisius

Michelle Iacono scores twice in victory

BUFFALO, NY – Senior Michelle Iacono (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) scored both goals in the Rider University women's soccer team's 2-0 road win at Canisius on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Broncs improve to 3-8-2 (3-2-2 MAAC), are unbeaten in their last three and 3-1-2 over their last six. The Golden Griffins slip to 7-6-1 (2-4-1 MAAC) with the loss.

Iacono got the Broncs on the board in the 19th minute, beating her defender to a low cross from Erica Ludwikoski across the top of the six-yard box to redirect it past the goalkeeper's right. With less than three minutes left in the opening half, Iacono added another. This time, she dribbled past her defender into right side of the 18-yard box, cut back and shot past both a Canisius defender and the goalkeeper inside the near post.

Neither team could score the rest of the way, with freshman goalkeeper Carmen Carbonell (Valencia, Spain/Guadalaviar) and the Rider defense posting their second clean sheet of the year.

Quotes & Notes
"A really solid performance today by the team in all departments. The bench led the energy which on the road makes a huge difference. The defensive unit was strong, disciplined and did an impressive job limiting Canisius' chances. Carmen made a really big save just before half time to keep the score at 2-0 and keep the momentum in our favor. Offensively our midfielders controlled the tempo and did well getting the ball in the wide channels especially in the first half. And up top Michelle is arguably playing the best soccer of her career. She is exciting and a joy to watch when running towards goal." – Rider Head Coach Drayson Hounsome
