Drexel University 6, Rider University 2
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Senior Kim Valdes (Jupiter, Fla./King's Academy) had a two-run double in the first inning but the Broncs could not hold the lead in a 6-2 non-conference loss at Drexel University on Tuesday afternoon.
Valdes doubled to right center field, scoring sophomore Toni Nino (Adelanto, Calif./Silverado) who reached on an error and senior Dana Sensi (Allentown) who walked.
Nino had two of Rider's four hits in the game and stole two bases.
“Although the final score didn't show it, we really had some good at-bats,” said head coach Jaci Timko. “That's exactly what we want to see heading into the second conference weekend.”
Drexel (16-18) scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to tie the game 2-2 and the Dragons used a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead.
An RBI single, run-scoring double and sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning accounted for Drexel's final three runs.
Junior Megan Ailand (Burlingame, Calif./Burlingame) went the distance for Rider (3-22), scattering nine hits and allowing five earned runs.
Rider travels to Fairfield for a MAAC doubleheader on Saturday.
