HIGH POINT, NC—The Broncs managed just six hits on the day, losing a doubleheader at High Point Saturday. “We just can't seem to get things going,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “We do a lot of things well but too many things not well.”

In the second game Rider (0-11) sophomore CJ Hirschy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) pitched six innings, allowing three runs while striking out five. “He threw fine,” Davis said. “Three runs in six innings, you can't fault that.”

Rider scored a run on two hits and an error to cut the lead to 4-2 in the eighth. “We got a little rally going in the eighth,” Davis said. “We had runners on first and third with one out and down two.”

Freshman Mike Maldonado (Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to give Rider a 1-0 lead.

Maldonado also singled in the eighth inning. “He moves the ball around,” Davis said of his rookie outfielder.

High Point (12-4) scored three runs in the fifth inning on four hits and a Rider error to take a 3-1 lead. High Point added a run in the seventh inning on two hits for a 4-1 lead.

In game one, High Point scored three runs in the sixth inning on two hits and two walks to take a 5-1 lead.

The Panthers added a run in the seventh and four in the eighth for a 10-2 lead.

Rider junior Vincenzo Aiello (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs. “Vinny threw really well,” Davis said. “We had a good, 2-1 ball game going into the seventh inning.”

High Point scored two runs on four hits and an error to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Bronc sophomore Andrew Tumbelty (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) singled and scored on an RBI single by junior Tyler Kaiser (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) to give Rider a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

Tumbelty had two of Rider's six hits in the doubleheader. “I thought he played well today in his first starts,” Davis said.

The Broncs will stay in North Carolina and play a two-game series with Campbell March 15-16.
