Brown University 20, Rider University 2 / 5 innings
ROCK HILL, S.C.—The Rider University softball team lost on the final day of the Winthrop Tournament on Sunday to Brown.
“We learned a lot about the team this weekend,” said first-year head coach Jaci Timko. “We saw a lot of promise from some key players. Now it's about building on what we saw and getting all of the pieces put together.”
The Bears scored four runs in each of the opening two innings and an eight-run third inning put the game out of reach.
For Rider (0-5), senior Dana Sensi hit a double to right field in the bottom of the third inning and with two outs, senior Emily Cottrell (Beachwood/Toms River HS South) hit her second home run of the season to put the Broncs on the board.
Sensi and Cottrell each had two of Rider's six hits in the game with Sensi batting .615 (8/13) in the tournament with three doubles.
Rider opens the home portion of the 2016 schedule against North Carolina A&T on March 7 at 2pm.
