Box Score Women's College Soccer
Marist College 2, Rider University 1 (2OT)
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ— Overtime has not been very kind to the Rider women's soccer team this year. The Broncs have played six overtime games this season and have just one win to show for it.
“Overtime has not been enjoyable,” said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. “Disappointing loss today for sure.”
The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game to Marist in double overtime Saturday afternoon.
Rider is now 1-2-3 in overtime games this year, including 0-1-1 this week in a pair of games that Rider led 1-0. “Today was the same as Wednesday, winning 1-0 and couldn't get the second goal,” Hounsome said. “Once you go to overtime it is a crapshoot.”
Marist (7-7-1, 3-3-1 MAAC) scored the Golden Goal in the 104th minute of play after stealing the ball in the box.
Rider (8-4-3, 5-2-1-MAAC) junior Michelle Iacono (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) scored in the 20th minute of play on an assist from junior Ellie Smith (Norwich, England/Norwich City) to give Rider a 1-0 lead.
“Ellie dribbled to the end line and pulled the ball back,” Hounsome said, “and Michelle scored a nice goal to make it 1-0. That was a positive in the game.”
It was Iacono's third goal of the season and the 11th of her career. The assist was Smith's team-high fifth of the season.
Marist tied the score in the 74th minute of play.
Rider entered the game in second place in the MAAC. Rider is now 1-2-1 in its last four games.
Marist out-shot Rider 16-13. “Marist wasn't really dangerous today,” Hounsome said, “until the last 20 minutes. Maybe because we played overtime Wednesday night, but we looked tired in overtime today.”
Rider senior goalkeeper Bethany-May Howard (Glastonbury, England/Bridgwater College) made six saves. “Beth didn't really have too much to do,” Hounsome said. “She did fine. She didn't have to make any really great saves.”
The Broncs finish the regular season with games at Iona (October 19) and at Fairfield (October 22). “We're just trying to get into the playoffs now,” Hounsome said.
