POUGHKEEPSIE, NY— Marist is Rider's oldest conference rival, dating back to 1992 when the two institutions were in the Northeast Conference. Both Rider and Marist moved to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 1997.

On Saturday, the Rider volleyball team defeated Marist before the Marist men's soccer team defeated Rider.

It came down to the women's soccer game Saturday evening to determine who would win the rubber match.

As it turned out, the Red Foxes won the day.

Marist (2-6-1, 1-1 MAAC) scored the lone goal of the contest just five minutes into the game. “Marist came out with a lot of energy in their first home conference game,” said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome.  “They did a nice job of not letting us play. They forced us into errors and they managed to capitalize on a goal in the first five minutes.”

Marist out-shot Rider 13-10, including 7-5 in shots on goal. “We were never able to get the equalizing goal,” Hounsome said.

Rider (4-4, 1-1 MAAC) junior goalkeeper Bethany-May Howard (Glastonbury, England/Bridgwater College) made six saves.

Rider junior Caroline Healy (Dublin, Ireland/Alexandra College) continued to pace the Broncs.  “Caroline played very well,” Hounsome said.  “She hustled well, she caused a few problems. No one really had a bad game, but no one had a great game.”

The Red Foxes had not won since defeating Lehigh in overtime in August.

The last time Rider defeated Marist was during the 2011 season. The Broncs and Red Foxes tied 2-2 at Rider last season. The last time Rider traveled to Poughkeepsie (2013) the Broncs lost 5-0.

Rider hosts Saint Peter's Wednesday at 7pm.
