Rider University 3, Delaware State University 0

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—Following a 50 minute delay to start the game due to lightning in the area, lightning struck three times in the first half for the Rider Broncs.

Junior Caroline Healy (Dublin, Ireland/Alexandra College) had a goal and an assist to lead Rider to victory over Delaware State Wednesday evening.

“After the long delay we wanted to come out strong and be aggressive and that is what we were able to do,” said Healy, a Biology major who now has two goals and five assists in her career.

The win snaps Rider's three-game losing streak. “It is great to get a win,” said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome.

With the win the Broncs are now 3-1 in their last four home openers.

Rider built a 33-10-6 record at home over the last six years before beginning this season 1-0 at home.  “We only have six home games this year so if we win all six we will be doing alright,” Hounsome said.

Rider (2-3) took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute of play when Healy sent a crossing pass in to sophomore Alanna McDougall (Valley Stream, N.Y. /Valley Stream North), who scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career.

“That was a play we've been working on,” Healy said. “I sent it in after a short corner and Alanna was able to get on the end of it.”

“Caroline gives you everything she has every time she steps foot on the field,' Hounsome said.

Freshman Meghan McCabe (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) took a crossing pass from sophomore Shannon Kelly (Mineola, N.Y. /Kellenberg Memorial) and scored her first collegiate goal in the 32nd minute for a 2-0 Rider lead.

Just two minutes later Healy headed in a pass from freshman Kourtney Cunningham (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) for the final score. “Kourtney sent in a great ball and I just had to get my head on it,” said Healy in her Irish brogue.

Rider out-shot Delaware State (1-4) 13-4, including 8-3 in shots on goal.

Rider junior goalkeeper Bethany-May Howard (Glastonbury, England/Bridgwater College) made three saves for the shutout, the seventh of her career. “Beth was great,” Hounsome said. “I was pleased she was able to get the shutout. She made one really great save.”

Rider won 2-1 at Delaware State last season. Rider and Delaware State have now met eight times with Rider holding a 7-0-1 advantage in the series that began in 2006.

The Hornets lost their first three games before defeating UMass Lowell 2-1 on Friday.

Rider travels to NJIT Sunday for a 1pm game.
