RIVERDALE, N.Y.—Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Manhattan College Jaspers hit two solo home runs for a come from behind 3-2 victory over the Rider University softball team on Saturday morning.
The Jaspers won the opener 2-0, holding Rider to three hits to sweep the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader.
“Losing these two games really hurts,” said head coach
Tricia Carroll. “Delany (DeMello) pitched well, minus a couple of walks. We just couldn't score.”
For Rider (8-22, 3-5 MAAC) in the opener, despite hits from junior
Kim Valdes (Jupiter, Fla./King's Academy), junior
Emily Cottrell (Beachwood/Toms River HS South) and senior
Allysen Breeden (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown), the Broncs lost by two.
Sophomore
Delany DeMello (Roseville, Calif./Roseville) threw a complete game, working six inning and recording four strikeouts.
The Jaspers took a 1-0 first inning lead on a two-out double, wild pitch and RBI single.
Manhattan added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a one-out RBI single.
In the second game, sophomore
Megan McDonough (Olney, Md./Sherwood) scattered nine hits in six innings, allowing two earned runs while recording two strikeouts.
“Minus the one pitch, Megan pitched well,” Carroll said. “We battled in the seventh putting two runners on and Dana (Sensi) just missed a home run.”
Junior
Dana Sensi (Allentown) hit a one-out single in the top of the first inning, eventually scoring on a single by McDonough to give Rider its first lead of the day.
Sensi led off the third inning with a single and following a double by Cottrell, senior
Gina McCool (Marlton/Cherokee) hit a sacrifice fly giving the Broncs a 2-0 lead.
Sensi and Cottrell each had three of Rider's 12 hits in the doubleheader.
Manhattan used two hits and a Rider error to cut the Bronc lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
Trailing 2-1, Manhattan hit a one-out solo home run to tie the score and with two outs, the Jaspers homered over the centerfield fence for the final score.
Also for the Broncs in game two, freshman
Monica Clark (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) had two hits including a double.
Manhattan swept Rider last season in Lawrenceville, winning 4-3 in eight innings and 6-2. The Broncs and Jaspers have met 36 times with Rider winning 16 in the all-time series. In 2012, Rider was swept at Manhattan 13-1 and 5-1.
Rider travels to the University of Delaware for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday.
