Rider at Whiting-Turner Towson Invite
Broncs 18th of 22
GRASONVILLE, Md.—The Rider University golf team opened the 2014 spring season, competing at the rain delayed Whiting-Turner Towson Invite March 30-April 1.
After the opening 18 holes at the par 72, 6,703 yard Hog Neck Golf Course, located in nearby Easton, Maryland, Rider finished the tournament at the par 72 Prospect Bay Coutry Club in Grasonville and the Broncs were 18th of 22 teams with a final day score of 308.
Rider opened with a 334 on Monday and finished with a two-day score of 640.
“As a team, we are capable of a lot more,” said head coach Jason Barry. “We played much better today than on Monday and were in a much better rhythm.”
Senior James Buttermark (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) moved up from 45th out of 113 golfers to place 17th after an even par 72 on Tuesday.
“James played solid all day to shoot even par,” said Barry.
Buttermark shot 80 on Monday for a two-day total score was 152.
Also for the Broncs junior Luke Liddell (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) finished tied for 52nd with a two-round total of 158, shooting scores of 82 and 76.
“Luke grinded out his score,” Barry said. “He never quits.”
Sophomore Tom Yarson (Montgomery) placed 70th with a 161 (82-79).
Junior Cole Clark (Califon/Voorhees) shot 88 and 81 (169) to finished tied for 98th.
Freshman Aaron Simone (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna), playing unattached, scored rounds of 89 and 80 (169) to also tie for 98th.
U Minn Woon from Fairleigh Dickinson was the medalist shooting an even par 72 and was two over par for the tournament with a total score of 146.
Virginia Commonwealth won the team competition (598), followed by Fairleigh Dickinson (603) and Northern Colorado (606).
“We were happy to get two competitive rounds in,” Barry said. “We are looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Rider plays at the Lafayette Spring Invitational April 5-7.
