NEWARK, Del.—The Rider University softball team lost 2-0 at Delaware Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game.

“It was a tough game,” said head coach Tricia Carroll.  “Ali was solid and pitched great.  We played solid defense but couldn't get that one timely hit.”

Freshman Ali Meagher (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) threw a complete game for the Broncs, recording two strikeouts.

Tied 0-0 in the top of the third inning, the Broncs had singles from junior Mary Rossi (Trenton/Notre Dame), sophomore Lauren Davies (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) and freshman Dana Sensi (Allentown) and loaded the bases with two outs before a fly ball in foul territory ended the inning.

“We were missing that one key hit to get us on the board,” Carroll added.

The Blue Hens struck for their only run in the bottom of the third inning with a two-out RBI single.

Rider (7-32) had a runner reach base in the fourth inning on a single by sophomore Allysen Breeden (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown), the fifth inning on a single by junior Kehli Washington (Lulea, Sweden/New Rochelle) and the sixth inning on a single from freshman Kim Valdes (Jupiter, Fla./King's Academy) but could not score.

Rider left seven runners on base.

Delaware (31-11) hit two doubles in the sixth inning, the second with two outs for the final score.

Rider and Delaware split two games last season with the Broncs winning 4-0 in the opener and the Blue Hens taking the night cap 4-1 in Lawrenceville at Herb and Joan Young Field.  During the 2011 season, the teams met in Newark when the Blue Hens won 4-1 in a rain-shortened game.

Former East Coast Conference rivals, Rider and Delaware have met 51 times with the Blue Hens holding a 32-18-1 series lead.  The teams met in Lawrenceville in 2010 with Delaware winning 6-5 before the teams tied 4-4 in the nightcap.  Delaware won twice by 2-0 scores in Newark in 2009 and won 9-2 and 3-2 in Lawrenceville in 2008.

Rider travels to Loudonville, New York on Saturday for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader against Siena College, beginning at 1pm.
