KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The Rider University softball team was swept in a doubleheader against Green Bay on the final day of the Rebel Spring Games in Florida Wednesday.
The Phoenix won 16-1 and 6-5, despite a six for six day from Bronc freshman Dana Sensi (Allentown).
“The second game was completely different from the opener,” said head coach Tricia Carroll. “We played hard and competed and that is all we are asking the players to do.”
In game two, Rider (3-21) took a 1-0, first inning lead on an RBI single by Sensi, scoring junior Kehli Washington (Lulea, Sweden/New Rochelle) who led off with an infield hit. Washington had two hits and scored twice in the nightcap.
Sensi batted .382 (13/34) in the trip down south with three doubles and a home run, slugging .559.
Trailing 3-1, the Broncs scored four times in the bottom of the fifth inning, including a two-run double by freshman Kim Valdes (Jupiter, Fla./King's Academy) with Rider taking advantage of a two-run error to open up a 5-3 lead.
The Phoenix rose up and scored twice in the sixth inning, both runs unearned and Green Bay used an RBI double to left field with two outs in the top of the seventh inning for the final score.
Freshman Ali Meagher (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) scattered nine hits and allowed four earned runs while pitching all seven innings.
“Ali pitched well for most of the game,” Carroll added.
Also for Rider in game two, senior Heather Muscara (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had two hits.
The opener was all Green Bay as the Phoenix scored twice in the first inning and 10 times on eight hits in the second inning to open up a 12-0 lead.
“We didn't compete at all in the first game and that was disappointing,” Carroll said.
Sophomore Allysen Breeden (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) doubled to center field in the third inning, scoring Washington who had singled with two outs for the only Rider run of the game.
In the 10 games on the trip, Washington batted .500 (16/32) with 10 runs scored and she was 10 for 11 in stolen bases while also picking up career hit #100, the 45th Bronc to reach that milestone.
Green Bay scored twice more in both the third and fourth innings for the final score.
Red-shirt freshman Krista Morrone (Pipersville, Pa./Palisades) worked four innings and gave up 14 hits in the loss.
Rider returns north and the Broncs are scheduled for a doubleheader at Army in West Point, New York on Sunday.
