Rider University 1, Monmouth University 1 (2 O.T)
WEST LONG BRANCH-The Broncs tied Monmouth Sunday evening. "It was a good game, a tough game," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome.
Rider (5-1-1) took a 1-0 lead when senior Kaitlin Wylie (Croydon, Pa./Pennsbury) scored in the 14th minute of play on a 25 yard shot high into the net. It was her second goal of the season and her second career goal.
"Wylie played midfield today and scored a good opening goal," Hounsome said. "She blasted it with her left foot. We probably had the better of the first 25 minutes but we took our foot off the gas a little bit."
Junior Jennifer Meier (Sayville, NY/St. Anthony's) was credited with the assist.
Two minutes later Monmouth (3-4-1) hit the cross bar and scored on the rebound to tie things up at 1-1. "It was a little bit lucky," Hounsome said, "coming off the cross bar straight down to a player's foot."
Monmouth (3-4-1) out-shot Rider 22-15, including 10-8 in shots on goal. Rider had seven corner kicks to Monmouth's four. "It was just a close game," Hounsome said. "A good Division I soccer game. Monmouth is very dangerous offensively."
Rider senior goalkeeper Jenn Nichols (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) made nine saves. "Jenn had another great game in goal," Hounsome said. "Monmouth is a handful and Jenn was able to keep us in it. She had a very strong performance."
Rider and Monmouth have now met 11 times since the series began in 1999, with the Hawks holding a 6-2-3 advantage in the series. The last time Rider defeated the Hawks was 2003. Monmouth beat Rider 3-0 in the last meeting, in 2009.
"Monmouth has been to the NCAA tournament twice in the last five or six years," Hounsome said. "They are a very tough team."
Rider travels to Delaware State Friday evening. "It is our last non-conference game," Hounsome said, "so we're looking forward to it."
