Rider 12th of 16 teams after
Day One at Binghamton Fall Invitational
APPALACHIN, N.Y.--The Rider University golf team is 12th place out of 16 teams after day one of the Binghamton Fall Invitational.
The 36-hole competition is taking place today and Monday at The Hills at Hiawatha Landing par-72, 7,104 yard Golf Course in Apalachin, N.Y.
Rider shot a 315 on the first 18-holes, and is 27-shots over par. The Broncs are two shots ahead of Colgate University who is in 13th (317) and one shot behind Fordham University who is in 11th (314).
"It was really cold today. It was in the mid forties all day long," coach Bob Whartenby said, "We had a couple guys who had a rough start and played catch up most of the day."
For the Broncs, junior James Buttermark (Staten Island, N.Y/Monsignor Farrell) is in a six way tie for 13th place out of 78 golfers after shooting a round of 74, a team best.
Also for Rider, sophomore Luke Liddell (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) finished the day in 47th after shooting a 79. Sophomore Cole Clark (Califon/Voorhees) finished one shot behind Liddell with an 80, and is tied for 57th place. Senior Beau Guarino (Burlington Township) ended day one in 65th place with a 82. Freshman Joe Hughes (Tabernacle/Seneca) shot a 87 and is currently in 75th place.
"It could've been much better," Whartenby said. "I'm hoping tomorrow being our last round this fall will end as our best round by breaking 305."
Laval University is in first after day one with a team total of 291. Bucknell University is four strokes behind in second (295). Hofstra and Saint Peter's University are tied for third after both teams shot a 297.
The host Bearcats are tied in fifth place with St. Bonaventure University after team rounds of 302.
Towson (304) finished the day in seventh and Mount St. Mary's (305) is one shot behind in eight. One shot separates Seton Hall University (310) who is in ninth and Cornell (311) who finished the day in 10th.
Wagner College (318) ended the first 18-holes in 14th place with the University of Ottawa (322) in 15th. Binghamton "B" wrapped up round one in 16th after shooting a 325.
The final 18 holes will begin Monday morning.
