Rider 13th of 17 at Rutgers Invitational

PISCATAWAY-The Rider University golf team began the 2010 fall season placing 13th of 17 teams at the Rutgers Invitational this weekend. "This is a great field, especially for the first tournament of the season," said head coach Bob Whartenby. "Probably one of the better fields we play in."

The Broncs had a 315 Friday morning, came back to shoot a 303 Friday afternoon, and had a 306 Saturday. "We had it going this (Saturday) morning," Whartenby said. "We got off to a much better start today than we did yesterday. With three holes remaining we got backed up a little bit. It was slow the last few holes and some guys hit some bad shots that cost us a lot of shots.".

On Saturday, senior Brent Wolgast (Bay City, Mich./Pendleton) had a 76 to finish with a 54-hole total of 229 to place 43rd of 88 golfers; Wolgast shot a 153 (76/77) on Friday.

Senior Brian Accorsini (Hopkinton, Mass/Hopkinton) shot an 80 on Saturday to finish 49th at 231. Accorsini shot a 151 (75/76) on Friday.

Senior Jordan Wycoff (Fort Washington, Pa./Saint Stephen's Episcopal) had a 76 Saturday for a total of 236 to finish 62nd, Wycoff  had a 160 (83/77) on Friday

Freshman James Buttermark (Staten Island, N.Y/Monsignor Farrell) shot an 83 Saturday to finish 67th at 237, tied with junior Chris Wolak (Issaquah, Wash./Hopkinton), who had a team-best 74 on Saturday at the par 71, 6,337 yard Rutgers University Golf Course and also finished with a 237. Buttermark had a 73 after an opening round 81 for a two-round total of 154 on Friday. Wolak shot a 163 (85/78) on Friday.

Last season, Rider also opened at Rutgers and finished sixth of 13 teams (614) with Rider graduate Eric LeFante (Colts Neck) carding a 143 (71/72) to place runner-up.

The Broncs compete at Saint Bonaventure's Leo Keenan Invitational September 19-20. "It can only get better from here," Whartenby said. "Our guys have always competed well at the Leo Keenan and I expect them to do that again."
