CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA-The Broncs began the 2010-11 wrestling season by defeating Gardner-Webb and Anderson while losing to 21st ranked Virginia in a quad meet Saturday. "We knew Virginia was going to be a tough team," said Rider head coach Gary Taylor, "but I was glad we were able to beat the other two teams in the fashion we did."
For Rider (2-1), junior Jimmy Kirchner (Somerville, N.J./Somerville), junior Aaron Nestor (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds), senior Rob Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff), senior Joe Ferber (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem High School East) and freshman Evan Craig (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) all won twice.
Kirchner, Nestor and Ferber won by fall against Anderson, while Morrison won by fall against Gardner-Webb.
"Morrison wrestled well today," Taylor said. "His loss today (6-4 to Virginia's Christopher Henrich) was to a two-time All-American. Robbie and Zac (Cibula) were the sharpest for us today."
Other Bronc wins against Anderson came from freshman Ray De La Nuez (Edison, N.J./Edison), senior Fred Rodgers (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown), and freshman Franklin Miele (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional).
Against Gardner-Webb, freshman Chuck Zeisloft (Woodbury Heights, N.J./Gateway), sophomore Zac Cibula (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg Casco) and freshman James Brundage (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) picked up wins.
"Zac is coming down from a weight class and wrestled tough against the Virginia kid (2-1 loss)," Taylor said. "The more he gets used to (149) the better he'll do. He had a heck of a match against Virginia. Chuck (Zeisloft) also had a great match against the Virginia kid (8-4 loss to Matthew Snyder) who is very good."
Rider has a young team this season. "We knew going in this was going to be a process this year," Taylor said.
The Broncs compete at the Binghamton Open November 14. "We need to go to Binghamton and get some experience for our young wrestlers," Taylor said.
