Marist College 2, Rider University 1
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY-The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Marist Friday night. "Marist wanted it a little more than we did," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. "I thought that showed in the second half."
The Broncs (5-5-2, 1-2 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute of play when freshman Jody Sokol (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) scored her fifth goal of the season. "Jody scored a great goal," Hounsome said. "I don't know how she did it, really. There were a lot of people around her, but she created some space and scored a quality goal."
The Red Foxes tied the score at 1-1 with just over two minutes left in the first half on a header off of a direct kick. "They equalized it on a controversial goal," Hounsome said. "The referee said the ball did not go over the goal line but the linesman said it did."
Marist (7-6, 3-0 MAAC) scored the game-winner with less than four minutes remaining on a header off of a direct kick.
Marist out-shot Rider 24-8, including 10-5 in the first half. "Give Marist their due," Hounsome said. "They definitely were the better team tonight. We didn't win enough 50-50 balls."
Rider senior goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) made five saves.
Rider defeated Marist 2-1 last season in Lawrenceville but the Red Foxes own a 9-5 advantage in the series that began in 1997.
Marist began MAAC play this year with 2-0 wins on the road at Saint Peter's and Manhattan.
The Broncs travel further up the New York Thruway to play 11-0 Siena Sunday afternoon. "We're looking forward to playing a nationally ranked team," Hounsome said of the Saints. "It is a great opportunity for us."
