Rider at the Lincoln Mercury Intercollegiate
Broncs 17th out of 18
Wolak finishes 50th
BEDMINSTER--The Rider University golf team finished the fall season at the 36-hole Lincoln Mercury Intercollegiate, hosted by Seton Hall at the par 72 Elbow Country Club in Bedminster October 16-17.
For the Broncs on Sunday, junior Chris Wolak (Issaquah, Wash./Hopkinton) shot a final round 80 for a two-day total of 157 after scoring a 77 on Saturday to finish tied for 50th out of 95 golfers.
"The wind was still up but it was warmer today," said head coach Bob Whartenby. "We had some tough pin placements today. Chris played pretty solid the last two days after struggling most of the fall. His swing came around in the last few weeks in practice and he came out and played well."
The individual winner was Justin Martinson of Delaware, who repeats as champion. His second-round 8-under-par, 64, set the River Course record.
Rider placed 17th out of 18 teams after a team score of 320 on Sunday. The Broncs shot 318 on Saturday and finished with a 638 total.
"The fall season was tough," Whartenby said. "We didn't really put anything together in the four tournaments that we played in. I think we need to focus on our short game over the winter and I'm looking forward to a great spring."
Binghamton (587) won by five shots over Temple (592).
Also for the Broncs, senior Brian Accorsini (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) finished with a 159 after a final round of 82. Accorsini scored a 77 on Saturday and finished tied for 59th overall.
Senior Brent Wolgast (Bay City, Mich./Pendleton) shot 161 (82/79) and tied for 69th, freshman James Buttermark (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) tied for 78th after a 163 (84/79) and senior Jordan Wycoff (Fort Washington, Pa./Saint Stephen's Episcopal) tied for 83rd after scoring 166 (82/84).
This was Rider's final competition of the fall season.
"As a team, we have a lot more talent than we showed in the fall," Whartenby added. "We just really couldn't get four scores together in the same round from a team stand point."
