Siena College 4, Rider University 1
LOUDONVILLE, NY-The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at 25th ranked Siena Sunday afternoon. "I felt we had a good chance to get a (positive) result," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome.
For Rider (5-6-2, 1-3 MAAC) freshman Jennifer Meier (Sayville, NY/St. Anthony's) picked up a loose ball after the Siena goalie, Laura Ettinger, made a save but dropped the ball following a collision, and scored her fourth goal.
"We had some good performances," Hounsome said. "(Sophomore) Meghan Mohr (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem) did a good job on one of their stronger players."
For Siena (12-0, 4-0 MAAC), Tabitha Tice scored a hat trick, all three goals in the second half. "She is a very good player," Hounsome said. "She almost single-handedly beat us. That took the wind from our sails."
The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute of play before Meier tied the score with 10 minutes left in the first half.
"Coming in at half time with the score tied at 1-1 was obviously a good thing," Hounsome said.
Tice scored her fifth goal of the season three minutes into the second half, her sixth goal a minute later, and her seventh goal of the season with 22 minutes left in the game.
Siena out-shot Rider 21-6, including 11-3 shots on goal.
Rider senior goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) made six saves.
Rider sophomore Jenn Nichols (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) played the final 21 scoreless minutes and made one save.
Rider lost 3-0 to Siena last season in Lawrenceville and is now 5-8-2 in the series that began in 1997.
Rider hosts Iona Friday night at 7pm. "We have to take care of the games at home," Hounsome said. "We're coming off a disappointing weekend but we'll work hard this week and build for Friday."
