NEWARK, Del.?The Rider University softball team was swept by Delaware in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday. “They were two really good games,” said head coach Tricia Carroll. “We just couldn't get a hit when we had runners in scoring position.”
In the nightcap, freshman Rachael Matreale (Williamstown) took the loss, recording six strikeouts in six innings of work. “I was really pleased with the pitching efforts,” said Carroll. “Both Rachael and Kelsey are maturing and are doing well in some tight spots. Both had great composure.”
Senior Katy Mills (Seattle, Wash./Mount Rainier) had two hits on the day including a double in the opener as the Broncs were held to two hits.
“We had six hits in the second game,” Carroll said. “We were getting them on but could not get them in. We had a lot of chances but didn't capitalize, especially in the second game. We had better at-bats in game two, especially junior Allyson Melia (Toms River/Toms River HS North) who hit a line drive with the bases loaded but Delaware made the play.”
Freshman Kelsey Krisch (Parker, Colo./Council Rock HS North) took the loss for Rider in game one, allowing four hits and only one earned run in six innings while recording four strikeouts. “Kelsey pitched well and was also very composed,” Carroll added.”
Rider (9-25) hosts Monmouth on Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader at Herb and Joan Young Field, starting at noon. The first game was originally scheduled to start at 1 p.m. but is being moved up in anticipation of inclement weather.
