FAIRFIELD, CT-The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Fairfield Friday evening. "We actually played very well," said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. "The score was not representative of the game."
The defending MAAC champions, Fairfield (8-7-2, 3-1-2 MAAC) scored on a penalty kick with less than two minutes left in the first half. "That was a bit of a blow," Hounsome said, "to have lost a penalty."
"We had some really good play in the first half," Hounsome said.
Fairfield made it 2-0 with 29 minutes left in the second half. "They're a good team," Hounsome said. "When they had the ball they are dangerous. Their second goal was a set piece off of a free kick."
The Stags made it 3-0 with five minutes left in the game when a shot was saved but the rebound was collected and put in.
Rider freshman goalkeeper Jenn Nichols (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) had six saves.
Fairfield out-shot Rider (5-9-1, 1-5 MAAC) 20-7, including 14-6 in the second half. Five of Rider's shots were on goal. Junior Lauren Musumeci (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon) had two of Rider's shots.
Fairfield is now 4-2-1 at home
Rider is 3-12 against Fairfield, the last win coming in 2004. Last year the Broncs lost 2-1 in overtime to Fairfield at Rider.
Rider travels to Iona for a MAAC game Sunday.
