LAWRENCEVILLE?For the second straight year the Broncs lost a 1-0 game to Monmouth. “Monmouth is a very good team,” said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome. “They went to the NCAA tournament the last two years and look to go again this year.”

Monmouth (1-0) took little time getting its 2008 season under way, scoring 58 seconds into the game. “In our first two home games, if you take away the first five minutes we are 1-0-1 at home instead of 0-1-1,” Hounsome said. Rider gave up a goal in the second minute of play in the season opener and eventually tied Lafayette 2-2.

Senior Joni DeMoor picked up a loose ball just inside the box and scored off of the left post for the only goal of the game. “It was a mistake that is correctable,” Hounsome said. “It was pleasing that we kept our composure after that quick goal and we competed with a good team.”

Monmouth out-shot Rider (0-2-1) 19-9, and had eight corner kicks to Rider's two.

Rider sophomore goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) made eight saves, while Hawk goalie Lia Fierro made three saves for the shutout. “Alex played great in goal,” Hounsome said.

Monmouth was 12-5-1 last season, winning the Northeast Conference Championship before losing to Penn State in the NCAA tournament.

“We may be 0-2-1 but from where we were three weeks ago the improvement we've made is huge,” Hounsome said. “It is like two different teams. You learn from your mistakes and we're learning.”

Rider travels to Towson Thursday afternoon.
