BUFFALO, N.Y. ? The Rider University softball team was swept by Canisius College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday to end the 2008 season. “Canisius is just good,” said head coach Tricia Carroll. “We played them tough, but they just started hitting the ball. They're just that good.”
Senior Mandi Sekly (Canyon Country, Calif./Canyon) led the Broncs with three hits on the day.
In the opener, sophomore Derrin Minunni (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker) sent a ball over the left field wall to give the Broncs their first run of the game in the fourth. Minunni finished the day with two hits and an RBI.
“We hung with [Canisius] until the fifth,” said Carroll. “It was a 2-1 ballgame, but then they just started hitting the ball.”
Rider (12-34, 4-12 MAAC) scored its only other run in the game off a Golden Griffin throwing error allowing freshman Brittany Eckett (Jackson/Jackson Memorial) to advance home. Eckett led the inning off with a single.
Canisius (35-12, 15-1 MAAC) was tough in game two, shutting out the Broncs and holding them to only four hits.
Bronc senior Tiffany Day-Neutill, (Agoura Hills, Calif./Oaks Christian) a pre-season All-MAAC selection, finished her career with 194 hits, fifth best all-time at Rider.
“I'm proud of the team,” adds Carroll. “We competed all year long. I'm disappointed in the results, but not at all in the effort. The players worked hard and were committed.”
