Rutgers University 10, Rider University 2 / 5 innings
PISCATAWAY?The Rider University softball lost a non-conference game at Rutgers on Tuesday. “That was disappointing,” said head coach Tricia Carroll. “We spoke before the game about giving away extra outs and we didn't do a very good job on defense today.”
The Broncs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single from sophomore Derrin Minunni (Cohoes, N.Y./Shaker) with the bases loaded followed by a hit by pitch with freshman Amanda Centeno (Ventura, Calif./Buena) at the plate. Centeno went two for two with a double for Rider.
Rutgers responded with four runs in the bottom of the third and five in the fourth inning, putting the game out of reach.
Rider (7-15) made five errors and eight of the 10 Scarlet Knight runs were unearned.
Junior Lauren Brunner (Chino, Calif./Chino) took the loss, lasting two innings, allowing four runs, none earned.
“Lauren [Brunner] and Jes [Holland] both pitched fine,” Carroll said. “Eight unearned runs, that's really all there is to say. We'd make an error, then Rutgers would string together a few hits. We just gave away too many extra outs.”
Rider hosts the University of Delaware on Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader at 3:00pm.
