LAWRENCEVILLE ? The Rider softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader with Manhattan College on Sunday. “The first game was great,” said head coach Tricia Carroll. “Lauren [Brunner] pitched awesome and we came up with some great defensive plays and hits when we needed them.”
For the Broncs, junior Lauren Brunner (Chino, Calif./Chino) pitched seven scoreless innings scattering five hits in the opener. “I threw a lot of inside pitches today,” said Brunner. “I'd go hard inside and then just right back to the outside. It kept them off balance and worked really well.”
Rider (11-25, 3-5 MAAC) scored in the bottom of the sixth off a bases loaded, RBI single by senior Aimee Schiller (Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley). Rider added to its lead when freshman Amanda Centeno (Ventura, Calif./Buena) walked with the bases loaded scoring senior Tiffany Day-Neutill (Agoura Hills, Calif. (Oaks Christian) and giving Rider the 2-0 lead.
“[The players] showed a lot of poise and patience in that last inning when we scored,” said Carroll.
Schiller finished the day with two hits and an RBI.
Day-Neutill recorded one hit on the day, moving her to fifth on Rider's all-time hit list with 190.
In game two, Manhattan (8-25, 3-7 MAAC) threw a five-inning complete game with Schiller recording the only hit for the Broncs.
“They hit and we didn't,” said Carroll. “That's all there is to it.”
Rider travels to Towson University for a non-conference doubleheader on April 24.
“In non-conference games, there's a different feel,” added Carroll. “We want to win them, but it gives us a chance to work on some things and hopefully prepare us for our last two conference weekends.”
