Iona College 1, Rider University 0
LAWRENCEVILLE?The Broncs lost to Iona in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Sunday. “It was a tough game, but not good enough when better is expected,” said Rider head coach Drayson Hounsome.
Iona (2-11, 1-1 MAAC) broke the scoreless tie 13:46 into the second half when Mariel Pepe collected a long pass, lost the ball to Rider's freshman Jordan Bunch (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial), then stole the ball back and scored from eight yards out.
Rider (1-8-2, 0-2 MAAC) out-shot Iona 16-12. “We weren't good enough today,” Hounsome said. “The players didn't perform.”
Rider sophomore goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) made seven saves. Post ranks 17th in the nation in saves per game with 7.8.
Iona goalie Kelly Mahoney made five saves for the shutout.
Iona defeated Rider 2-0 in New Rochelle last season. Rider won 1-0 here in Lawrenceville in 2006.
“Junior Kate Murphy (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) was very, very good again today,” Hounsome said. “Today was her birthday and she put on a bit of a birthday performance. Everyone else played a ?B' game, and a ?B' game won't get it done. They have to come with their ?A' game.”
Rider and Iona have now met 12 times with Rider holding a 7-4-1 advantage in the series that began in 1997. “I'm not sure if our players saw Iona's record and thought we were going to be given the win, but if we perform like that we will be near the bottom of the conference,” Hounsome said.
Rider travels to Manhattan for a MAAC game Friday. “We have to recognize that if we play Manhattan the way we played today we'll lose,” Hounsome said.
